Vitamins and Minerals
Hi,
Vitamins are substances that your body needs but cannot make. They facilitate chemical reactions in body cells and help you process the food you eat. Each vitamin has a specific role and regulates different body processes. There are 13 essential vitamins divided into two categories-fat-soluble and water-soluble.
The best way to get the vitamins you need is by eating a wide variety of whole, natural foods-vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Modest portions (2 to 3 ounces per meal) of lean meats, skinless poultry or fish. Although vitamin supplements are useful for some people, most nutrition experts recommend eating healthy foods as the main source of vitamins and minerals.
There is strong evidence that people who have a high intake of vitamin-rich foods are healthier than those who do not. There is no absolute proof that such a diet is the cause of their better health, but it is very likely. Increase your intake of vitamins by increasing the amount of vitamin-rich foods you eat every day.
Minerals help regulate fluid balance, muscle contractions and nerve impulses and are essential to the healthy development of bones and teeth. There are at least 20 minerals in a balanced diet, including calcium, magnesium and phosphorus.
Major minerals, such as calcium, are needed to build bones in childhood and slow the rate of bone loss in adulthood to prevent the bone-thinning condition osteoporosis.
Like vitamins, the best way to get the minerals you need for health is by eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
Women, who are especially vulnerable to osteoporosis, should eat enough calcium-rich foods to take in from 1,000 to 1,500 milligrams of calcium every day; calcium supplements are recommended if you cannot get enough from your diet.
In recent years, however, it has been discovered that the traditional definition of the minimum daily requirements for some vitamins may have been to low. A prime example is folic acid. Folic acid may help reduce the risk of coronary artery disease and some cancers. Ask your doctor for his or her advice on taking a supplement.
Folic acid is recommended for all menstruating girls and women. You lose a lot of iron in menstrual blood. Eating iron-rich foods is the best way to replace lost iron. You can get the folic acid you need in fortified cereals or in folic acid supplements also.
People Over Age 60
You may benefit from a daily multivitamin to ensure adequate nutritional intake. Many older people consume a diet poor in nutrients. Furthermore, some nutrition experts believe the body's ability to absorb certain nutrients declines with age.
Some Vegetarians
If you do not eat any meat, dairy, or animal products, you may need extra calcium, iron, zinc and vitamins B12 and D.

Very well worded post. The information you have put on here is bang on topic! It always amazes me how people will always make sure to put the right kind of gas or oil in their cars, yet slip and get laxed about what they put into their body.
Hi Adam, Health for living a long life, I say. I enjoyed your comments. Take care! :-)
Each of essential vitamins has a specific function in the body, but is effective only when taken with one another and in combination with proteins, fat and carbohydrates. Vitamins taken as drug can correct deficiencies treat diseases and make recovery faster. Minerals play an important role in maintaining the immune system of our body and any deficiency reduces the responsiveness of the system making us more prone to illness and infection.
